Families love life on 'really noisy' Nottingham road that is 'central to everything'

Families living next to one of Nottingham's busiest roads say they love their neighbourhood, despite the constant noise of traffic. Neighbours have explained that while Western Boulevard is one of the busiest roads in the city, living there can be great if you don't mind the noise.

Living on the main road means they have great travel links whether they drive or use public transport. Homes on the street are also closely located to a range of good schools, shops, a leisure centre, a hospital and a university, as well as other facilities.

Dentist, One local resident, who has lived in Western Boulevard for 10 years. She said: "It's quite noisy.

Do you think all residential roads should have a 20mph speed limit? Let us know

"I'm quite nocturnal and tend to wake up in the middle of the night to do my work and it's just as noisy at 3am as it is now in the morning, this is just the normal level of traffic."

She continued: "I'm actually from London and I got married and my husband is from here. I work in the town centre so it's a good commute.

"It's alright here as we have the bus stop there and it's easy to pull out, but for houses further down the road it's more of a struggle. We have to be really careful, it's very high risk with the traffic."

Speaking of using the pedestrian crossings, the 40-year-old added: "I have lost count of how many times I was about to cross and someone goes through a red light and almost hits me." When asked about the shops nearby, such as the small retail park (Beechdale Retail Park) with a Lidl, Costa Coffee and Subway, she said: " My husband goes five times a week to stock up and do a lot of our shopping, so it is handy as if you need anything it's not far to go.

"We have shops behind us as well." When asked her favourite thing about living on Western Boulevard, she replied: "The thing I like most about living here is the fact that I can always see the moon, it's very peaceful."

A retired 63 year old who did not wish to be named said: "We have been here 13 years. It's the nearest place for everything, we have the hospital, we're near the mosque and the schools and universities, it's a very central location.

"That is one of the main reasons we moved here, it's convenient for everything. It is busy, but even if it's busy it's still safe.

"The only thing that we have is that there are four houses here that don't have parking and have to park on the road but there's no dropped curb and it would be nice to have the dropped curb for them."

He continued: "The only thing is there's a lot of traffic. It can be noisy if you have single glazing, but some people have triple-glazed windows and that helps, but we don't hear a lot of noise.

"As a Muslim having the mosque across from us is handy." Housewife, Riffat Waseem, 40, has lived on the street with her family for two years.

She said: "It's a very busy road, it looks like this all the time. It can be busy but it doesn't really bother us. We see blue sirens a lot go past but we don't hear too much.

"When we first moved here there was a little grocery shop down the road and now we have many facilities and more shops as well. They have made a cycle route and that has got a lot of people walking and cycling down here."

Riffat added: "I just think at the moment we have everything on our doorstep, like with the schools and there is a library here and all these things within the area. It's really good.

"There's definitely a community feel on the street." A 30-year-old mum on the street, who did not wish to be named, added: "We've lived here about 5 years. It's really noisy all the time, but you do tend to get used to it after a little while.

"We always hear ambulances and police cars. I don't really shop at Lidl so it doesn't affect us too much."

Despite living on one of the city's busiest roads, she explained that she best enjoys the "privacy" of her home.
