"She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date."

Cara shot to fame back in 1980, when she was cast in the musical movie Fame. Initially a background dancer, Irene had her own role as Coco written for the production, which saw her sing the famous title track.

Professionally trained, the 80s legend also sang and co wrote the iconic anthem "What a Feeling" for the movie Flashdance - winning both an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Female vocal performance in 1984.

Cara would continue to act and sing, appearing in films like D.C Cab and City Heat and performing in live theatre. She also formed the all-female band Hot Caramel in 1999.

In 2004, Cara was inducted into the Ciboney Cafe's Hall of Fame and was a recipient of the Prestige Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award.
