Fallout: London is finally out today and can be downloaded for free

An epic game modification (mod) for Fallout 4 that recreates an apocalyptic version of London is due for release on Thursday (July 25).

Fallout: London project manager Dean Carter confirmed to Inverse the mod will come out “unless nuclear war happens.”

Fallout 4 is set in an imagined, post-nuclear war version of Boston in 2287. Fallout: London transposes the action to London, 40 years earlier in 2247.

This is one of the largest and most high-profile game mods to date. Its voice cast includes former Doctor Who actors Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker and the ex-Speaker of the House John Bercow

Fallout: London’s map is comparable to the size of that of Fallout 4 itself and recreates sights of the real-world city not just its centre. It “lets players experience everything from the heart of Westminster all the way to the rolling hills on the outskirts of Bromley,” says the Fallout: London website.

It’s described as a “DLC-sized” mod. Estimates of its play time range from 15 hours to 25 hours, although its store listing suggests completionists may get “up to 90 hours of gameplay” from this generous freebie.

It features 200 quests, 20 factions and 15 boroughs. Here’s the full list of those London areas covered:

  • Bromley
  • Camden
  • City of London
  • Croydon
  • Eastminster
  • Greenwich
  • Hackney
  • Islington
  • Lambeth
  • Lewisham
  • Newham
  • Southwark
  • Tower Hamlets
  • Wandsworth
  • Westminster

The mod is made by a non-commercial team of enthusiasts and volunteers, “many of whom are proud London residents or expats.”

Fallout: London will get a release on Gog.com, listed as “coming soon” at the time of writing. This is for those who already own Fallout 4: Game of the Year edition on the platform, and it takes all the effort out of getting the mod working.

Those who own the game on Steam instead will have to follow the introductions available on the mod’s website, which includes downgrading your Fallout 4 installation to an older version.

Why? Fallout: London was originally pencilled in for release a few months ago. However, Fallout maker Bethesda’s “next-gen console update” for Fallout 4 in April scuppered those plans. It broke compatibility with mods.

The bad news is there are no plans to bring Fallout: London to consoles. It’s just for PC players, at least for now.

Fallout 4 saw a massive resurgence of interest in April, following the release of Amazon’s Fallout TV show and the next-gen game update. It hit peaks of almost 190,000 players, according to SteamDB. Those numbers are closer to 25,000 today, but perhaps Fallout: London will give it another double-decker bump.
