Fallen tree causes disruption on major Cardiff road

A major Cardiff road has been blocked by a fallen tree this evening, causing disruption along one of the main roads into the city.

South Wales Police and South Wales Fire Service have both responded to the incident, near the Lincoln House Hotel.

The tree crashed inwards towards two houses along the road, pictures taken at the scene show. A homeowner has been instructed to stay at the rear of the property affected whilst they await the arrival of a structural engineer.

It comes as Storm Franklin has begun causing chaos across Wales this evening, as heavy winds and rain are battering cities and towns across the country, causing travel disruption, power cuts and serious incidents.

One woman who was in the area at the time said: "I drove past at 5pm and there was a fire engine and a fireman. They put blue tape around the tree which hit the house, obviously from the storm."

Mathew Trow lives in one of the neighbouring properties.

He told WalesOnline: "I live next door more or less to the property. I could see blue flashing lights out of the window, I went and had a look, and the tree had fallen over.

"My housemate and I went to have a look at it, and it looked like it had hit two houses. It doesn't appear to have caused any damage, there may have been a broken window. It was hard to tell because the tree was in the way.

"Police cordoned off half the road and were redirecting traffic and since that time some contractors have come, chopped it up and taken it away.

"It was pretty scary because I have got a tree right outside my house too.

"All these houses are really old and made of stone, and I think they're tough to it really! This street has a lot of big old trees on it.

"There is no damage to our property, it fell between next door and next door but one.

"I don't think anyone was hurt, and it hasn't caused any significant damage. There wasn't a lot of people around, a few people taking photographs and then police, fire brigade, and the tree surgeons."

A yellow weather warning is in place covering the whole of Wales, with wind gusts anticipated at 65-75mph in coastal areas, and more widely 50-60mph further inland.

The latest storm follows on from a week in which Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice also impacted the UK, the latter bringing with it a red weather warning.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "The call came into us at 4.50pm, and we sent one fire engine to the scene.

"We handed the incident over to the police, and the occupier of one of the properties (that the tree collided with) was told to await arrival of a structural engineer and stay at the rear of the property."

The police have been contacted for comment.
