Falkirk schools and GPs will close on the day of Her Majesty the Queen's funeral

Falkirk schools and GP surgeries will close on the day of Her Majesty the Queen's funeral to observe the national day of mourning.

Falkirk Council confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) that schools and nurseries across the district will close for the special bank holiday on Monday, September 19.

All of the council's sport, leisure and culture facilities will also be closed, as will community halls and centres, except Callendar House which will remain open until 5pm for anyone wishing to sign the book of condolence.

The NHS has also confirmed that GP surgeries will be closed for the day. However, operations and outpatient appointments scheduled to take place on Monday will go ahead as planned.

The UK government has said that the bank holiday "will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning".

On Monday, the Scottish Government advised local authorities that schools across Scotland should close on September 19 as a mark of respect. This advice also applies to other education settings that would normally be closed on a bank holiday.

Several local authorities had a public holiday planned for Monday 19 anyway but Falkirk schools were closed on Monday, 12 for the annual September weekend.

Many shops and businesses will also be shut for the day.

The NHS has said that a number of pharmacies will be open on Monday to provide health advice and treatment and details will be published on its www.nhsforthvalley.com/infozone.
