Falcons injury updates from Wednesday’s practice

The Atlanta Falcons (2-0) are back to work as they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions (1-1). The team took the field without defensive lineman Calais Campbell on Wednesday as the veteran got the day off for rest.

Falcons defensive back Jeff Okudah continues to practice, although he has yet to make his regular season debut. It sounds like there’s a good chance Okudah plays this weekend against his former team.

Okudah and Patterson practice, Calais Campbell out

Campbell, 37, is getting the day off for rest, which will likely be a weekly thing for the veteran. Okudah and Patterson both practiced all three days last week but did not play in the team’s Week 2 game against the Packers. Check back for each player’s injury status on Wednesday’s report.

Troy Andersen status TBD

The Falcons played without inside linebacker Troy Andersen against the Packers in Week 2 after he was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Andersen returned to practice last Friday, but he was still ruled out. Andersen’s absence allowed Nate Landman to get the start and the second-year linebacker played well. Landman earned one of the team’s top PFF grades in Week 2.

Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown is day-to-day

St. Brown has been a force for the Detroit, but he won’t practice on Wednesday, according to Lions head coach Dan Campbell. Thus far in 2023, St. Brown has 12 catches for 173 receiving yards and a touchdown. If he’s out Sunday, it would be a big advantage for the Falcons.

Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson could return this year

Gardner-Johnson is having surgery for a torn pectoral muscle he suffered during the Lions’ Week 2 loss to the Seahawks. While it initially sounded like the safety would be out for the remainder of the season, there is some hope he’ll return this year. Obviously, he won’t be out there in Week 3 against the Falcons.
