Fake Merseyside council Facebook account tells people 'get a job'

A Merseyside council has issued a statement after a imitation Facebook profile told local people to "get a job."

Wirral Council has issued a statement after a Facebook profile pretending to be the council swore at local people and told them to "get a job." The account had the same name and profile picture as Wirral Council's official Facebook profile, and had posted multiple comments beneath council posts.

In posts seen by the ECHO, the fake account responded to one woman's concerns about street lights. It said: "Can you contribute and maybe pay your council tax bill? Then maybe then we could afford to turn them back on."

It was followed by the hashtag "getajob."

A Facebook post from the council's official page yesterday asked followers to "remain vigilant" and said they were "looking into way" to stop it happening. It read: "Please note: a fake Facebook account pretending to be us has been commenting offensive messages to residents under our posts.

"This was not our account. We have deleted these comments, blocked the account, and are looking into ways to stop this happening again.

"Please remain vigilant and we hope you are spending the extra hour today doing something more useful than this person."
