Fake cop scam warning for Dundee locals as crooks make over £300k in phone fraud

Police have warned Tayside locals of a banking scam sweeping the country.

Crooks are pretending to be officers to defraud victims out of thousands of pounds.

So far the sophisticated gangs have made off with more than £300k

The criminals are cold-calling people pretending to be officers and convincing them to hand over bank details and passwords.

Police Scotland are taking the situation so seriously that they have released an information video.

They have also given out top tiips to avoid falling victim to the conmen.

A spokesman said: “More than £300,000 has been defrauded from victims of an ongoing fraudulent banking scam involving people impersonating police officers.

“Never give out your bank details or hand over cash to anyone unless you are 100% certain of their identity.

“Police will never ask for remote access to your device.”

They said that if one of their officers contacts someone in person, they'll show their police warrant card.

This is proof of their identity and authority and can be verified by dialling 101.

If an officer contacts a person by phone or email they will never ask for bank details, tell you to transfer money from one account to another or hand cash over to a courier.

They stressed that if there is any doubt about a police officer’s identity a call should be made to 101 to check.
