Fairytale Edinburgh mansion hits the market with 'butler room' and hidden cottage

If your dream is to live in a castle, then this Edinburgh mansion might be one of the closest things to it.

Now on the market and searching for a new owner, the huge property is situated at the foot of the Pentland Hills in Balerno, and comes with some incredible features.

Although the price tag of £1,800,000 might be a bit of a set back for most, you definitely seem to get your moneys worth, from the stunning landscaped gardens to the hidden two-bedroom cottage tucked away on the grounds.

Coming with six bedrooms in total, Northfield House dates back hundreds of years, and from the outside, appears as if not much has changed from back in the day.

Inside however, the mansion has been upgraded to ensure all the modern comforts, but still has many features retained from its past. For example, this even includes a 'butler room', a servant bell call system and some of the original fireplaces.

Put onto the market by Rettie, the agents description reads: "Enjoying a stunning elevated position offering far-reaching panoramic views, Northfield is situated on the edge of the much sought-after and picturesque conservation village of Balerno that sits in the shadow of the majestic Pentland Hills.

"The six-bedroom mansion spans over 6,600 square feet and has a two-bedroomed Gardener’s Cottage hidden discreetly in one corner of the stunning landscaped grounds that feature a wonderful mix of wooded, landscaped and formal gardens.
Arranged over three levels, the handsome family house features a wealth of period features including original fireplaces, sash and case windows, a servant bell call system as well as several unique and quirky design features added by the architect himself.

"Examples of these include the carved monogrammed datestone plaque and the Portuguese tiled feature of Madonna della Catena above the front door, the hidden panelled cupboard in the drawing room, and the grape motifs that decorate the exterior drainpipes. Of particular design note is the barrel-vaulted wood-panelled drawing room that spans the full length of the house.
