FAI release statement on issues for Ireland fans getting into stadium in Athens

The FAI have released a statement after hundreds of Ireland fans were delayed getting into the Opap Arena for Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifier with Greece.

As the sides made their way onto the field, large swathes of empty seats could be seen in the away end despite Ireland selling out their away allocation.

It soon emerged that Irish fans were locked outside the stadium hundreds of Irish fans were locked outside the stadium as one of the doors reportedly couldn't be opened. A lack of turnstiles is also understood to be a reason for the delayed entry.

Irish fans were finally seen piling into the stadium shortly after kick-off, with video footage appearing to show fans climbing over seats to reach their allocated seating area.

Friday's game was the first International match to be played at the newly developed OPAP Arena.

"The Football Association of Ireland is aware of the issues facing Ireland fans entering the stadium ahead of tonight’s UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match against Greece at the Opap Arena in Athens.

"The FAI engaged with officials of the Greek Federation before the start of the match and action was taken at that point to address the issues being faced.

"The FAI is reviewing those access issues with the Greek Federation and UEFA, as the safety of our fans will always be of the utmost importance."
