FAI CEO says Euro 2028 bid could 'unite the country'

The FAI have formally expressed their intention to bid for the right to host the 2028 European Championships along with the four ‘home nations.’

The English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish FAs will bid for the tournament, which may be expanded to 32 teams for the first time.

A feasibility study undertaken by the five associations recommended a bid for the Euros over the original plan to host the World Cup in 2030, which will likely now take place in Africa.

"One of the core tenets of our strategy moving forward and the vision is to unite the country in relation to football,” Hill told FAI TV.

“I can't think of anything more inspirational than the possibility of hosting the third largest sporting event in the world.

"We are committed with the other four F's to now look at that process and we have a period up to March 23 for us to express our interest in so doing.

“We're very excited by the news this morning. It has wider economic and social benefits.

“There is a whole range of positive outcomes that we will have in relation to inward tourism, employment and the use of local volunteers etc.

“We are working with the Irish Government now to look at all of those impacts and for now the Government are very positive in relation to the bid."
