Faces jailed this month, mess strewn across city and HMRC urgent reminder

These are the latest ECHO headlines this morning.

Faces of 55 people jailed in Merseyside this month

These are the faces of 55 people jailed in June for crimes linked to Merseyside and our wider region.

Dozens of criminals have gone before judges across our region to be sentenced for offences they have committed and while some were given a second chance others were handed time behind bars.

They include a woman who sexually abused a 15-year-old over a period of months and a depraved dad who begged an undercover police officer to send him pictures of underage children.

They also include a woman who scammed her own family out of hundreds of thousands and a man who hit a young girl on an e-bike before leaving her injured in the street and fleeing to France rather than face justice.

These are some of the people jailed in June in our region.

Anger as mess and filth strewn across city as students depart

Anger is growing after more scenes of rubbish dumping and fly-tipping in areas of Liverpool as students head home for the summer.

Images of huge piles of rubbish and overflowing bins have been pictured in different parts of the city that have high levels of student housing. Many university students have left or are in the process of leaving their properties and heading home for the summer holidays.

Earlier this week the ECHO featured a shocking image of mess left in Woodcroft Road in the Picton area, where students have also been vacating their properties. But these issues have been reported in a number of different locations.

City councillor Nick Small reported on some grim scenes in the Kensington Fields area of his ward, on the outskirts of the city centre. Kensington is an area known for having a high density of student housing.

Sharing a number of images of fly tipping, dumping and overflowing bins in the area, Cllr Small said: "This is completely unacceptable and selfish behaviour from a minority of students. We've been working hard with our three universities, student unions and Liverpool Student Homes on educating students about what they need to do when they move out.

"The universities are funding community skips so there's no need for this. We've had to ask for the council to bring in extra waste collections."

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have issued an important reminder to anyone claiming Tax Credits.

Approximately 323,000 benefits claimants are at risk of losing out on money if they don't take action by the end of this month. Payments will be stopped if claimants do not renew their Tax Credits before the deadline on July 31.

Tax credits help working families with targeted financial support – so it’s important that customers renew before the deadline to ensure they don’t miss out on money they’re entitled to.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s director general for customer services, said: "There’s just one month to go for our tax credits customers to renew. It’s easy to do online or on the HMRC app – search ‘tax credits’ on GOV.UK."
