Facebook users hit with 'weird' glitch that sees their feeds spammed with celebrity messages

Facebook has confirmed that it is looking into an issue on the site after thousands of users were hit with a strange glitch on their main feeds this morning.

The bug saw Facebook users around the world find their timelines bombarded with ‘random’ posts from people they weren’t following, particularly messages sent by fans to the accounts of celebrities or famous pages. Lots of users complained that the onslaught of ‘spam’ posts was making the platform unusable, leaving them unable to see any updates from friends and family.

Facebook saw a huge spike on the Downdetector website from around 7am on Wednesday morning as thousands of users reported the problem. The social media giant confirmed that it is working to fix the bizarre issue.

Meanwhile, users did the only thing left to do in times of social media crisis - hopped over to the next available platform to air their complaints. Taking to Twitter , one person asked: “Is anybody else’s Facebook news feed acting weird?”

Hundreds of users confirmed that their timelines were indeed on the blink. “Facebook has gone weird today! Random posts to celebs on my timeline. Please fix soon!” one Twitter user wrote.

Another asked: “Noticed a few changes to your Facebook feed this morning? Looks like there’s a glitch - and now everyone’s feed is flooded with comments, memes and posts to pages.”

“I seriously thought my Facebook account got hacked after seeing all the weird posts in there!” someone else added. “Facebook please fix this soon, it’s uncomfortable to scroll through all that.”

A spokesperson for Meta said: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble with their Facebook feed. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
