Facebook ‘broken’ as news feeds hit by bizarre bug

Facebook has been "broken" by a bizarre bug that causes strange posts to appear on users’ feeds.

People waking up to check their news feeds on Wednesday morning were confused after seeing many unusual posts from strangers which had been posted to the pages of celebrities. The glitch appeared to be an issue with the system that automatically decides which posts will appear on a user’s feed.

The glitch caused any comments posted to a celebrity’s page to be pushed into the feed of anyone who follows that particular celebrity. Usually, comments to celebrity's pages are filtered out by Facebook’s algorithm, meaning a user’s news feed may see posts from the celebrities but not from their friends.

It is this filtering system which appears to be causing the issue and making the site practically unusable to anyone who wants to see posts from the people and pages they actually follow. Some users were able to make light of the issue, as a plethora of memes began circulating which referenced the chaos being caused by glitch.

Many people rushed to Twitter to discuss the problem and share screenshots of the bizarre state of their news feeds. Others suggested Facebook could have been hacked but there was nothing to suggest the glitch was not in internal fault.

Tracking website Down Detector showed thousands of reports from affected users from around 7am on Wednesday, with people around the world reporting issues. Meta – Facebook's new overarching brand company – have yet to comment.
