Fabio Carvalho told he can become Liverpool's next James Milner

Luis Garcia has likened Liverpool's new summer signing Fabio Carvalho to James Milner due to his versatile nature as a player.

Carvalho joined the Reds from Fulham, having come close to making the move to Anfield during the January transfer window, and has impressed during his first two pre-season outings against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The teenage midfielder came close to opening his goalscoring account for the club versus United on Tuesday afternoon, but was denied by the woodwork after his shot struck the post.

It remains to be seen the part Carvalho will have to play during the 2022/23 season, though his chances of earning first-team minutes are strengthened by the fact he is able to operate both out wide and in midfield. Commenting on the benefits this will bring, Garcia pointed to the various roles Milner has played for the team in recent years and has backed the 19-year-old to follow suit.

“He’s one of those players who you can play in so many positions. We’ve seen Milner play in midfield, as a striker, almost as a goalkeeper and I think Carvalho is the same. We saw him almost in a full-back position and in the middle as we saw the other day,” Garcia told LFCTV.

“He’s a player who with the ability he’s got and the speed he’s got, he can play in every position on the pitch. If you play him in the midfield onwards he’ll be even better because he has that ability to score."

Carvalho scored ten goals and registered eight assists in 36 Championship appearances last season as Fulham became league champions and sealed their return back to the top-flight. Utilised as a No.10 and on the left wing throughout the season, the Portugal U21 international developed a strong relationship with former Liverpool forward Harry Wilson.
