Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar must wait for the chance to achieve his 'dream' of winning a trophy on Tyneside after Sunday's Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United. The 31-year-old soldiered on, as ever, after an early clash of heads with Lisandro Martinez at Wembley Stadium but couldn't help his side to victory at the national stadium.
Schar responded to the 2-0 defeat with an emotional social media message in which he said it had always been his intention to bring silverware to St James' Park ever since joining the north east outfit. While many Newcastle fans are convinced Sunday is only the start of a bright, new, final-filled era for the club, nobody knows when the Magpies will be back at the national stadium.
"Still hard to find words. Since I came to Newcastle my dream was to win a trophy for this club and the fans. To give all the people around this club what they deserve," the Swiss defender wrote on Instagram.

"Yesterday was not that day but sometimes that's football. I want to say thank you for your incredible support, it means so much to me and I am truly thankful to be part of this amazing club. Now is time to get up and fight for things we want to achieve this season.
"I will leave my heart on the pitch like I always do and I will do everything I can for black and white. I am sure one day we are gonna lift a trophy together."
Schar's short-term future at Newcastle isn't even up for debate but at the age of 31, question marks linger over whether he will reach another cup showpiece in black and white.
That goes for a number of Eddie Howe's squad who are now fighting for their future at the club. Howe even admitted after the game: "There will be some players that might not get back to Wembley."
For the likes of Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Dan Burn and Callum Wilson, all of whom are entering the final years of their fine playing careers, the hunger will be there to end Newcastle's agonising wait for a trophy should they remain at St James' Park next season and beyond.
