The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating an incident that occurred at Syracuse Hancock International Airport in upstate New York this week. The incident involved a commercial flight that had to abort its landing as another plane appeared to be taking off from the same runway.
The event, which took place around 11:50 a.m. on Monday, was captured on a North Syracuse police dashboard camera video. The footage shows the two airplanes passing close to each other in the sky, although the exact proximity is not clearly defined.
According to an FAA spokesperson, the air traffic controller directed PSA Airlines 5511 to perform a go-around to maintain separation from an aircraft that was departing on the same runway. The preliminary data from FlightRadar24 indicates that the PSA flight, arriving from Washington, and Endeavor Air 5421, bound for New York, were approximately 625 feet vertically apart as their flight paths began to intersect.
As of now, the FAA has not classified the incident as a near collision, but the matter is under investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the close proximity of the two aircraft.
