The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a ban on flights near the uncontained wildfires in Los Angeles, as stated in a federal bulletin issued to pilots. This restriction was enacted at the request of the Los Angeles Fire Department to ensure a safe environment for firefighting aviation operations.
The temporary flight restriction encompasses an area starting a mile north of Santa Monica Airport and extends over Pacific Palisades, Malibu Beach, and the Getty Center. The ban, in effect until January 21, prohibits flights up to 7,000 feet above sea level.
While this measure aims to clear the skies above the fires of air traffic, fire officials have indicated that firefighting aircraft are currently grounded due to high winds. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire, operates an air tanker and helicopter attack base at Hemet-Ryan Airport located east of Los Angeles.
