The FA are looking into an incident that led to referee Michael Oliver going over to speak to Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp during Arsenal’s win over Liverpool.

In a memorable Premier League encounter at the Emirates, the Gunners returned to the top of the table as they beat Liverpool 3-2, making it eight wins in nine matches in the league this season.

Gabriel Martinelli put the hosts in front inside a minute while Bukayo Saka netted twice, ensuring that goals from Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino were not enough for Klopp’s side who continue to struggle for form.

There was a flare-up on the pitch following the award of a penalty to Arsenal, given after Gabriel Jesus was brought down in the box. Gabriel and Jordan Henderson clashed, while Granit Xhaka was also in the middle of things as tempers boiled over.

The referee went over to the touchline and spoke to both managers, though it was uncertain what led to this.

It has now been confirmed that the FA are reviewing an incident that took place, with no further details given.

“We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool,” an FA Spokesperson said.

“We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident.”

Sky Sports gave a further explanation, suggesting that the touchline conversation was due to a comment made by a player on the pitch.

Presenter David Jones said: “What we understand has happened is something has been said on the field.

“The referee, Michael Oliver, has come over to speak to the managers and what we’re being told now is that that matter has been referred to the Football Association. And any further comments on it will come from them.”
