FA Cup replays could be scrapped again as Leeds United among clubs with major fixture backlog

FA Cup third and fourth round replays could be scrapped this season in an attempt to help clubs catch up on postponed matches following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Replays were scheduled to return this year after they were ditched in each of the last two seasons due to COVID.

However, according to PA News Agency, this is one solution under consideration to solve the fixture backlog. Last weekend's Premier League programme was called off as a mark of respect for the Queen, but Leeds United facing fixture pile-up as battle to squeeze in Manchester United trip begins are among the six clubs that will have to wait until October to return to domestic action.

The Whites’ scheduled trip to Manchester United on Sunday has also been called off due to policing issues, which have come about due to the increased presence needed in London for the Queen’s funeral. Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool, and Brighton’s match against Crystal Palace are both also postponed this weekend, with the latter due to planned rail strikes.

It leaves clubs facing a potential fixture pile-up later in the season in a season already like no other due to the six-week break set for the World Cup this winter. "Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures," a Premier League statement read.

"The Premier League would like to thank the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces across the country, as well as our broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.

"For the matches being played during the period of national mourning, tributes will be paid to the Queen at Premier League stadiums. New dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course."
