FA Cup fifth-round draw: Man City host Plymouth and Man Utd face Fulham as ties confirmed

The draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup has been made as the remaining 16 sides discovered their fate as the competition intensifies.

Plymouth Argyle’s reward for their giant-killing of Liverpool is a meeting with another of the Premier League’s biggest clubs with a last-16 trip to face Manchester City. Holders Manchester United, meanwhile, are handed a home tie against Fulham as they look to make the quarter-finals.

Preston North End and Burnley collide in an all-Lancashire clash of Championship clubs, with second-tier Cardiff City travelling to Aston Villa. Crystal Palace will face Millwall in a south London derby if they progress past Doncaster Rovers, with Ipswich awaiting the winner of Exeter vs Nottingham Forest. Finally, there are two all-Premier League encounters: Newcastle United vs Brighton and Hove Albion and Bournemouth vs Wolves.

Plymouth's reward for beating Liverpool in the FA Cup is a fifth round tie away to Manchester City.

The Pilgrims dumped the current Premier League leaders out of the competition with a 1-0 win on Sunday thanks to Ryan Hardie's second-half penalty, and will now head to the Etihad Stadium for a last-16 tie against the seven-time Cup winners, who had to come from behind to beat Leyton Orient 2-1 on Saturday.

A reminder of those two ties to be played, with Doncaster Rovers vs Crystal Palace kicking off shortly and Exeter City vs Nottingham Forest to come tomorrow. A Palace-Millwall tie could be fun for those south of the river in London - though that is, perhaps, getting ahead of ourselves.

An all-Lancashire tie between Preston and Burnley brings together two former winners to contest a place in the last eight. Tasty. Although Scott Parker’s side haven’t exactly been scintillating to watch this season...

How’s your luck, Plymouth? After a stunning upset of Liverpool, it’s a long trip north to Manchester City for Argyle next as they bid to continue their cup run - mind you, an encounter with Pep Guardiola’s men isn’t quite as fearsome this season as in past campaigns.

The greatest FA Cup shocks as Plymouth pull the rug on high-flying Liverpool

18:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Plymouth downed all-conquering Liverpool 1-0 at Home Park in the shock of the fourth round as the Premier League pace-setters found themselves dumped out of the FA Cup by the Championship’s bottom team.

Here is a look back on some other celebrated giant-killing acts from over the years:

Jack Grealish opens up on ‘most difficult year of life’ amid Man City struggles

18:40 , Michael Jones

Jack Grealish explained how 2024 was the ‘most difficult year of my life’ following Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Grealish was a part of City’s Premier League winning squad last season which lifted the top-flight trophy for the fourth time in a row yet the winger only started 10 times for Pep Guardiola’s side.

He then missed out on a spot at Euro 2024 in the summer where England reached the final before losing out to Spain.

The 29-year-old has continued to be used as a substitute player for City, despite their struggles to reach the heights of previous years, but played 90 minutes against Orient at the weekend. It was only the fourth time since October that he’s featured for a full game.

Arne Slot defends Liverpool team selection and says FA Cup line-up ‘done for a reason’

18:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Arne Slot declared his weakened FA Cup line-up at Plymouth was done “for a reason” as Liverpool faced up to a shock exit to Championship strugglers and criticism his team selection had devalued the competition.

Ryan Hardie’s second-half penalty secured a famous 1-0 win for Plymouth, rock bottom in the Championship, against the Premier League leaders in Sunday’s fourth-round tie at Home Park.

In what was Liverpool’s 13th game since Boxing Day and ahead of Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at Everton, Slot made 10 changes from the side which had dismantled Tottenham three days earlier to reach the Carabao Cup final.

Only goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher remained with skipper Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch among Liverpool regulars to be given the day off.

Slot was accused on social media of disrespecting the FA Cup by leaving so many of his stars on Merseyside, although Liverpool still started with a front line of Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Luis Diaz, while Darwin Nunez came off the bench after Plymouth scored.

The Dutch manager also suggested later that Plymouth’s direct playing style meant there was no guarantee Liverpool would have progressed to the last 16, even if his first-teamers had featured in Devon.

Pep Guardiola responds to ‘sacked in the morning’ jibes before Man City v Real Madrid in Champions League

18:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Manchester City overcame a real fright against Leyton Orient, Pep Guardiola’s side again lacking in their usual ruthlessness. The Manchester City manager is becoming familiar with a certain taunting refrain, but insisted ahead of a pretty sizeable Champions League fixture tomorrow that he has no fear of the sack:

Ange Postecoglou hits out at ‘agenda-driven’ criticism with dig at Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat

17:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Under fire Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou says calls for him to be sacked are “agenda driven” and no other side would be able to cope with the amount of injuries his side have suffered.

Postecoglou’s position was plunged into more uncertainty after Spurs were knocked out of their second cup competition in four days following a 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa.

After losing the Carabao Cup semi-final to Liverpool last week, a depleted Spurs went down to goals from Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers at Villa Park though new signing Mathys Tel scored a late consolation goal.

Postecoglou is happy for people to say what they want about him, but insists no other team could have coped with the injuries he has had to deal with over the last few months.

FA Cup: VAR to be used from fifth round

17:25 , Chris Wilson

As a reminder, the use of VAR is introduced in the competition from the fifth round onwards.

The fourth round carried plenty of controversy due to the lack of VAR, with Harry Maguire’s winner for Manchester United against Leicester clearly offside on replay.

Birmingham also found themselves on the end of a contentious decision, as the linesman flagged for a Newcastle goal despite replays suggesting that the ball had not crossed the line.

In a statement made when announcing their decision to remove VAR from the earlier rounds, the FA said: “This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part in the same stage of the competition.”

FA Cup facts

17:10 , Chris Wilson

Of the 14 teams guaranteed to be in the draw tonight, only five have never won the competition.

Brighton, Fulham, Millwall, Bournemouth and Plymouth have never won the FA Cup, with Argyle and the Cherries never having contested a final.

Fulham, Brighton and Millwall have all lost in the final, with the Seagulls and Millwall both being beaten by Manchester United in their only appearances (in 1983 and 2003 respectively).

FA Cup: Previous winners

16:55 , Chris Wilson

In the last 11 years, only one side from outside of the so-called ‘top six’ has managed to win the FA Cup.

That victory came for Leicester in 2021, when Youri Tielemans proved the difference against Chelsea.

Since Wigan shocked Manchester City in the final in 2013, only six different teams have won the competiton – Manchester United (twice), Man City (twice), Arsenal (four times), Liverpool, Chelsea and of course Leicester (all once).

FA Cup round dates

After the fifth round, the competition moves to the quarter-finals, which is the last round before Wembley.

The dates for each round are below:

Fifth Round - Saturday 1 March 2025

Quarter Final - Saturday 29 March 2025

Semi Final - Saturday 26 April 2025

Final - Saturday 17 May 2025

Harry Maguire’s luck and Alejandro Garnacho’s skill save Ruben Amorim from more Man Utd misery

16:10 , Chris Wilson

For swathes of the last six years, Leicester City could savour the thought of Harry Maguire and Manchester United. Not here, however, and not in injury time. Leicester were left with a sense of injustice, cursing the goal scored by the man they sold for a world-record fee for a centre-back. Maguire’s Old Trafford career has not always proceeded swimmingly, but on a night when they looked like drowning in their own incompetence, he instead turned rescuer.

A 93rd-minute header took the holders into the FA Cup fifth round in dramatic fashion; controversial, too, given that Maguire – and three of his teammates – had looked suspiciously offside when he ran on to Bruno Fernandes’s deep free-kick to plant an emphatic header in. Amid scenes of bedlam, with no VAR to spare Leicester, United’s act of escapology was complete. “We were not defeated in Fergie time, we were defeated in offside time,” said Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy. “This was half a metre, clear in line. It is decided on a clear and obvious mistake, that is unacceptable and unthinkable at this level.”

Which FA Cup ties are still to be played?

15:55 , Chris Wilson

There are two more ties yet to be played from the fourth round, with the first one taking place tonight and the final one happening tomorrow evening.

Tonight, Doncaster host Crystal Palace, before the round concludes with Exeter City vs Nottingham Forest tomorrow.

Manchester City avoid shock at Leyton Orient thanks to Kevin De Bruyne winner

15:40 , Chris Wilson

Kevin De Bruyne struck in the 79th minute to spare the blushes of Manchester City and earn them a hard-fought 2-1 victory in a rip-roaring FA Cup fourth-round tie at Leyton Orient.

The League One side went ahead in remarkable fashion after 16 minutes when a 40-yard strike by Tottenham loanee Jamie Donley hit the bar and went in off City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to send Brisbane Road into pandemonium.

Pep Guardiola had watched City get thumped 5-1 at Arsenal last Sunday and would have feared more London woe, but substitute Abdukodir Khusanov deflected a Rico Lewis shot to level after 56 minutes.

When will the fifth round ties take place?

15:30 , Chris Wilson

The fifth round will be played across the weekend of 1 and 2 March. However, judging by the fourth round, ties could by spread across multiple days and take place from as early as Friday 28 February through until Monday 3 March.

Liverpool stunned by Plymouth as quadruple hopes ended by FA Cup shock

15:15 , Chris Wilson

Plymouth produced a huge FA Cup upset as Premier League leaders Liverpool were knocked out by the bottom club in the Championship to end hopes of a historic quadruple.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot gambled with a weakened side in Devon and literally paid the penalty as Ryan Hardie’s second-half spot-kick gave Plymouth a famous 1-0 win and sent them into the fifth round of the competition.

It was only the fourth time that the team starting the day at the top of the Premier League has been eliminated from the FA Cup by a side from outside the top flight.
