FA approach Harvey Elliott for explanation over Liverpool celebrations after Carabao Cup win

The Football Association have written to Harvey Elliott after the Liverpool midfielder was seen holding a flare following the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

The Reds beat the Londoners 11-10 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Wembley on Sunday after a 0-0 draw across 120 minutes.

In the celebrations Elliott could be seen walking around the pitch with a red smoke flare as the Liverpool players and coaching staff toasted to the success in front of around 33,000 fans at the national stadium.

The FA were made aware of the incident on Sunday evening and have since communicated their need to hear from Elliott about the details and his observations.

It's unclear how the 18-year-old obtained the flare but pyrotechnics were set off in the Liverpool end earlier in the game when Joel Matip thought he had scored before it was ruled out for offside on Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have so far declined to comment on the situation with Jurgen Klopp due to face the media on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the FA Cup fifth-round tie with Norwich at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Elliott was initially not meant to be in the squad for the game but was deployed on the substitutes' bench at the 11th hour after Thiago Alcantara pulled up with a hamstring injury in the warm-up.

The teenager was then introduced as part of a triple substitution by Klopp with just over 10 minutes of normal time left to play.
