F1 Hungary Grand Prix 2024: Bullish Lewis Hamilton declares 'game on' as Mercedes bid for hat-trick of wins

Lewis Hamilton says it is “game on” for the rest of the season, as Mercedes find themselves in the unlikely position of bidding for a hat-trick of grand prix victories this weekend.

Hamilton secured his first victory since 2021 at the British Grand Prix just a weekend after team-mate George Russell had won in Austria.

And the seven-time world champion heads to the Hungaroring this weekend for the final race before the summer break believing more victories are on the cards.

The Briton said: “We definitely don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. That’s the key in our approach, but also we’re like, ‘game on’.

“We’re fighting, we’re chasing and we’re going to try to win as many races, or compete for as many wins, as possible.

“It may turn out this weekend that the Red Bull is still light years ahead or the McLaren, who knows? But what we have shown over the past few races is that with determination, focus and just persistently chasing for perfection and improvement, you can make a difference.

“We are united as a team and we are going to try to make sure that we finish this season on a high. It’s really exciting for us.”

Russell admitted the results of the last two races were in stark contrast to the team’s performance at the start of the season, but the cars have been transformed since their upgrades.

Russell said: “If you told us at the start of the year that we’d be fighting for three wins in a row, we wouldn’t have believed it.”

Red Bull and Max Verstappen will bid to recapture their best at the top of the timesheets in Budapest this weekend with their own big upgrade package.

Verstappen was runner-up at Silverstone and is looking for a return to winning ways for the first time in three races.

“If this is not giving us some good lap time, then I don’t know how the rest of the season is going to evolve,” said Verstappen ahead of trying out the new upgrades in practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

“But, at the same time, I also don’t know what’s coming from the other teams, right? So, we just focus on ourselves.

“We are bringing quite some things to the car. It is a bit bigger than what we have brought already. And, of course, I hope that will give us a bit more lap time.”
