F1 hopeful racing in two different countries on Sunday as plan after Spanish GP revealed

If you think Sunday is going to be a busy one for F1 drivers amid the Spanish Grand Prix, then spare a thought for Juan Manuel Correa.

Having returned to the Formula 2 Championship driver full-time this season, the 23-year-old will represent Van Amersfoort Racing in the build-up to Max Verstappen and co taking to the track in Barcelona. But he won't be hanging around afterwards.

Correa, who dually represents both Ecuador and America, also competed in endurance racing. Indeed, he competed in the 2022 European Le Mans Series with Prema Powerteam and has also participated in the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship.

And today he'll combine two racing disciplines on the same day - with the significant caveat that the events are taking place in two different countries. No sooner will Correa finish the Formula 2 race in Spain than he'll be jumping on a plane and heading to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans Test Day.

Motorsport Week reporter outlined his plans by tweeting: "If you think your Sunday is going to be busy, JM Correa is going to participate in the #F2 Feature Race in Barcelona, jump on a plane, and then take part in the remainder of the Le Mans test day."

The second testing session of the day gets underway at 3.30pm in France, and lasts for three hours. Should his flights be on time, Correa should be there for the full three hours.

But the fact the F1 hopeful, who has previously been on programmes with Lotus and Sauber, is on the track at all can be considered incredible given the aftermath of his harrowing accident in 2019. In August that year, Correa was involved in a serious crash at the 2019 Spa-Francorchamps FIA Formula 2 race.

French driver Anthoine Hubert tragically died as a result of the incident, while Correa suffered fractures to both of his legs and a minor spinal injury. He underwent surgery and spent time in intensive care, and spent several months in a wheelchair after his release.

But he made a remarkable comeback for the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship with ART Grand Prix, and has featured in all 10 Formula 2 races this season. Sixth place in the Baku event in April signifies his best effort in 2023.
