F1 fans call for boycott of Russian Grand Prix amid growing Ukraine crisis

Formula 1 fans have suggested that the 2022 Russian Grand Prix be removed from the race calendar amid the ongoing situation in eastern Europe.

Russia is currently on the brink of war with Ukraine, with 'peacekeeping' forces having entered the Donetsk and Luhansk regions which Vladimir Putin has officially recognised as independent.

A full invasion of Ukraine is highly likely, with more than 100,000 Russian troops stationed along the border along with heavy artillery and other supplies.

The US has imposed sanctions with many other allies set to follow suit, while Putin's actions have been denounced by western leaders as tensions grow between Russia and the rest of Europe.

The ongoing situation has already affected the sporting world, with UEFA expected to make a U-turn on their previous statement that they have "no plans" to move the Champions League final from Moscow.

F1 fans have also expressed their concerns over the fact there is due to be a Grand Prix in Sochi later this year, and have called for a boycott of the race if it is not cancelled.

"F1 needs to cancel the Russian race - NOW," one fan declared on social media site Reddit.

"Sanctions are about to come in and it will be a poor look if F1 goes through the process sitting on the fence."

The user went on to say the image of Putin standing on the podium after the race would be "very reminiscent of the 1936 Olympics", which were held in Berlin and used by Adolf Hitler as a chance to show off the might of his Nazi nation to the world.

In a bid to help put pressure on the sport's bosses to act, another user suggested that the drivers should get involved with the call for the race to be removed from the calendar.

"I think as long as we have Lewis [Hamilton] and Seb [Vettel] in F1, the chances of anyone listening is certainly higher than it would be without them, it just depends on the pair of them to speak up because they're the ones who are most likely to be heard," said ImJayJunior.

Fellow fan YourUndoing agreed, adding: "All drivers not named Mazepin (because of course he's not going to do it against his own country) need to threaten boycott if they do not cancel the race."

The Russian Grand Prix is scheduled to be Round 17 of the 2022 F1 World Championship, and take place on the weekend of 23-25 September.
