Running back Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys undoubtedly had a degree of success together. His quartet of 1,000-yard seasons were an important part of a winning Dallas era, even if the Cowboys were never able to quite break through in the postseason.
However, it was time for both to move on after the 2022 season. Even as he remains a free agent, Elliott seems to be coming to terms with his past in a level-headed fashion.
On Wednesday, Dallas running back Tony Pollard told reporters that Elliott sent the Cowboys’ backs a “good luck” text ahead of the 2023 season.
“Just telling all the running backs he knows we’ll handle business, take care of everything and just good luck,” Pollard said. “It means a lot with his situation, not being anywhere, but him still checking on us and making sure we’re alright.”
Dallas took Pollard in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of Memphis, and he gradually came to supersede Elliott—a transcendent talent at Ohio State and one of the league’s most visible stars—in the Cowboys’ pecking order.
“It’s frustrating for him [not being on a roster], especially with the way things are going now, but I know he’s a tough guy mentally and physically,” Pollard said. “I’m pretty sure he’ll find a way to battle through it.”
