EXTINCTION Rebellion is planning a climate protest this weekend in the centre of Glasgow after Scotland recorded its hottest ever day.
The protest is set to take place this Saturday at 11am on Buchanan Street with a planned theatrical display to call out politicians over climate change.
The protest follows a week where the UK recorded its highest ever temperatures. The mercury hit 34.8C in Charterhall in the Scottish Borders while the UK recorded a temperature over 40C for the first time ever.
The group says protesters will lie on the ground in white sheets while “a sombre drum beat echoes through the busy shopping area”.
Placards will be laid out on the "bodies" of activists stating causes of death including “heat stress – Death from temperatures rising to over 40 degrees” and “Famine - starvation caused by crop failure”.
This comes just seven months after Glasgow hosted COP26 which brought world leaders from across the globe to commit to tackling climate change.
Some of those set to be involved in Saturday’s protest commented on the current climate crisis.
Darren McGovern, an NHS Physiotherapist said: “If your house was on fire, you wouldn’t sit around and have a chat about it for 30 years or choose to throw more fuel on it to burn even faster. So why are allowing this to happen to our planet?”
Wolf Saanen, a receptionist in Glasgow, said: “We've been sounding the alarm about the global climate emergency for years. Now it has arrived on our shores, will those with the power to change things finally listen?”
Val King, a business adviser in Stirling, said: “In spite of clear warnings from the United Nations that there should be no new investment in oil and gas, fossil fuel companies, with the full backing of the UK Government are pressing on to open new fields. Only the Government has the power to make them stop.”
