Extended hours for Sherwood pub approved by Nottingham City Council Licensing panel

A Sherwood pub has had its licensing hours extended. Nottingham City Council's licensing panel met on Monday, October 10, where they approved an application to vary an existing license for The Sherwood Inn, located on Mansfield Road, where there is a number of late night businesses.

The pub had applied to have its licensing extended on Fridays and Saturdays so that it can sell alcohol an hour later. The application has also requested for the premises to be able to play recorded music for an additional 30 minutes on each of these nights, which would be until 1am and allow for a half hour period for customers to drink their remaining drinks.

Sherwood Inn has been in operation for several years, and is run by the Craft Union Pub Company, which has more than 400 sites across the UK. It was discussed in the meeting that other competing businesses nearby to The Sherwood Inn, did already have their hours approved until 2am, and it was also noted that there had been no objections to the application from any of the responsible authorities, including Nottinghamshire Police and Environmental Health.

Representations received by the panel, included concerns from residents over possible noise pollution from the premises, businesses being open late and anti-social behaviour concerns. Colin Barratt, chair of the Sherwood, Carrington and Mapperley Park (SCAM) Neighbourhood Watch, also attended the meeting and spoke on behalf of nearby residents to the pub.

He said: "I hear what's been said about other licensed premises having later hours, but the licensed premises we are talking about is much larger than any of the others that have similar hours, and it is right in the middle of a residential area." He also expressed concerns over the anti-social behaviour experienced by nearby residents with the current hours of the premises.

During the meeting, Alex Green, the representative of the applicant said: "Surely if this was a problem area and a problem premise, the police and Environmental Health would have objected, this fact in my opinion should carry considerable weight when determining this application. The premises licence has many robust conditions on it, these should be enough to keep the residents' minds at rest.

"However, we have also offered up an additional condition that hopefully would alleviate the concerns of the nearest residents the rear." Councillor Audrey Dinnall chaired the meeting and summarised the findings before stating the panel's decision.

She said: "The panel listened to all the evidence put before it and also took into the account the contents of the application, and all representations and submissions made in relation to it. Panel noted the concerns of interested parties and listened carefully to Mr Barrett on behalf of SCAM.

"[The] Panel have considered the likely effect of the application on persons living and working in the area around the premises and noted that the area to the rear of the application premises is largely a residential area. However, panel also noted that the noise the interested parties have referred may not have all been situated from the application premises.

"No specific evidence of noise from the application premise was presented and that once persons have left the immediate area surrounding the premises, they are accountable in their own right. Panel also noted that they have not received any representations from responsible authorities who are experts in their representative field."

She continued: "Panel therefore are also minded to grant the application, subject to the additional conditions offered by the applicant, namely the outside space of the application premises to be closed at 12:30am." Councillor Dinnall informed interested parties that if any problems should occur in the future, they did how the powers to the right to review.
