Explosive Luther: The Fallen trailer teases Idris Elba and Andy Serkis drama

An explosive trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, starring Idris Elba and Andy Serkis has dropped - and it looks incredible.

The much-anticipated return of the rogue detective will see DCI John Luther on the big screen in cinemas before landing on Netflix.

Fans of the BBC drama will remember Luther was last seen in prison after being convicted of various misdemeanours.

The first-look trailer opens with a prison riot and it appears the disgraced detective will use it as an opportunity to escape.

His former boss DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) is less than impressed to hear that the detective is no longer behind bars.

In the trailer new character Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo) also seems irritated by Luther's escape and it's safe to say she won't be rolling out the red carpet for his return.

However, Luther has bigger problems to worry about with the introduction of cyber psychopath and serial killer David Robey, played by Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis.

Throughout the tense trailer, Luther is taunted by the sadistic Robey in a race against time.

"I need to stop this man, I'm still a copper," Luther says before the trailer cuts to Raine who warns: "Not anymore and if you refuse to stand down a tactical unit will shoot you dead."

Robey is heard telling Luther: "John I looked you right in the eye becayuse I was curious. I wanted to know if you had seen it in me because that is who you are isn't it? The man who knows all about people like me."

The trailer concludes with Luther confirming he's "ready" and if anyone can stop this new villain it's him.

Last month, it was confirmed Luther: The Fallen Sun would be released in select cinemas on February 24 before its global debut on Netflix on March 10.

In a recent interview, actor Idris hinted at someone else stepping into Luther's shoes.

"John is a leading character in a film that he's the hero of. That's the comparison I'm making. Some films do them well – Bond is one of them. But my ambition for it is to have that sort of scale, that reverence," he told Total Film.

"I want people to be like, 'Ooh! Luther, the first film? Wicked'. And to continue that. And then maybe later down the line, when I'm too old, someone else will step in to play John."
