The alert advised agents to report anyone potentially armed approaching the border with possible explosive devices.
The IEDs' presence was revealed after Border Patrol agents found themselves inadvertently involved in a cartel conflict near the Trace Pilatus Ranch, east of the Sasabe Port of Entry in Pima County, Arizona. A man with a loaded AK-47 rifle, extra AK magazine, loose rounds, and a handgun was arrested on the U.S side of the border. The man informed officials about eleven armed suspects nearby. Soon after, gunshots could be heard coming from the Mexican side of the border leading to a swift Mexican military response.
The military discovered ten explosive devices packed with black powder and shrapnel. The law enforcement source reveals that drug cartels commonly use this ranch due to a gap in the border fence. This gap, which remains incomplete, is now an operational magnet for the cartel to smuggle people more than drugs.
