Explosions At Chad Ammunition Depot Kill Nine, Injure Dozens

Aftermath of explosion at makeshift gas cylinder refilling depot at Mradi estate in Embakasi district of Nairobi

Nine people lost their lives and over 40 individuals sustained injuries following a devastating fire that triggered explosions at a military ammunition depot in Chad's capital city. The incident occurred in the Goudji district of N'Djamena, jolting residents from their sleep late Tuesday night.

Government spokesperson Abderaman Koulamallah confirmed that 46 individuals were receiving medical treatment for various injuries resulting from the explosions. The situation has since been brought under control, with efforts underway to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of affected residents.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, prompting President Mahamat Deby Itno to announce an upcoming investigation into the tragic event. President Deby expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured individuals.

Residents in the vicinity initially mistook the explosions for an armed attack, causing panic among the population. Local media reported that the blasts began shortly before midnight, causing nearby buildings to shake and ammunition to be forcefully ejected from the depot.

Authorities advised residents to avoid the area, which was subsequently secured by security forces tasked with collecting scattered artillery shells. The community, deeply affected by the incident, called for urgent government assistance to address the aftermath of the explosions.

Chad, a nation of nearly 18 million people, has been grappling with political instability, particularly following a contentious presidential election that saw President Deby Itno emerge victorious. The country has also faced regional tensions, including its alleged involvement in the conflict in neighboring Sudan.

Experts suggest that the explosions may carry a deeper significance beyond mere coincidence, potentially serving as a message to the Chadian government amidst internal and regional political challenges. The incident underscores the fragile state of affairs in Chad, emphasizing the need for swift and effective responses to address the aftermath of the tragedy.
