An explosion following a suspected grill malfunction in Hawaii Thursday left at least seven people injured, authorities said. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. at The Whaler resort in Ka?anapali Beach, Maui.
The injured individuals, ranging in age from 18 to 74, were quickly attended to by emergency responders. Three of the victims are currently in critical condition, with one person airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a liquefied petroleum gas leak related to a suspected grill malfunction. However, the official cause is still under investigation by authorities.
Webcam footage captured debris being ejected from the building, while photos displayed the extensive damage caused by the explosion. First responders swiftly provided aid to the injured individuals at the scene.
The emergency response to the incident was significant, with 10 police officers and 13 firefighters among those who arrived at the scene to assist. Despite the severity of the explosion, there is currently no ongoing threat to the public, and evacuations were deemed unnecessary.
Residents and visitors in the area have been advised to avoid the immediate vicinity of The Whaler resort as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the explosion.
