Explainer: Three-horse race for coveted top-six spot in Scottish Premiership

This Saturday marks the final round of fixtures before the Scottish Premiership split, with just one point separating three clubs fighting for the last remaining top-six position.

Hearts currently cling to sixth place with 39 points, while both St Mirren and Motherwell sit precariously on 38 points, setting up a dramatic finale that will determine which club secures potential European football next season and which two join Kilmarnock, Ross County, Dundee, and St Johnstone in a bottom half relegation scrap.

The significance of securing that final top-six berth cannot be overstated, as it offers not just prestige but a realistic crack at European qualification – which would bring a financial windfall that could help any of these clubs' fortunes.

With 32 matches played across the board, the current standings paint a picture of just how tight this race has become:

  • Hearts: 6th place, 39 points
  • St Mirren: 7th place, 38 points
  • Motherwell: 8th place, 38 points

The permutations heading into the final pre-split fixtures are fascinatingly complex. Hearts hold their destiny in their own hands – a win in their final match would guarantee their top-six status regardless of other results.

However, Neil Critchley's men have to tackle a head-to-head clash against fellow contenders Motherwell at Fir Park.

Motherwell host Hearts in what amounts to a virtual playoff for top-six football. A victory for Michael Wimmer's Motherwell would catapult them above Hearts, though they would still need results elsewhere to go their way to secure that sixth position.

Meanwhile, St Mirren face their own must-win scenario when Ross County arrive in Paisley. The Buddies know that victory in their match, coupled with Hearts failing to win, would see them leap into the top six at the eleventh hour.

What's at stake?

The ramifications of this weekend's results extend far beyond mere league positioning. Finishing in the top half ensures five post-split matches against Scotland's elite clubs, including potential European qualification contenders.

Conversely, those consigned to the bottom six face a gruelling battle against relegation candidates, with the thought of the drop looming over each match.

The financial disparities between these two fates are substantial, with European qualification offering a lifeline of additional revenue in these economically challenging times.

Who's the form team?

Hearts' grip on sixth place has been tenuous in recent weeks. Their inconsistent form has opened the door for both Motherwell and St Mirren to mount serious challenges for that final top-six berth.

Motherwell had a resurgence when Wimmer replaced Stuart Kettlewell in mid-February, transforming a team once feared to be relegation candidates into genuine contenders for the top half. However, they are currently amidst a three-match winless run since beating Rangers at Ibrox on March 1.

St Mirren, meanwhile, have shown remarkable resilience throughout the season. Despite operating on one of the smaller budgets in the division, they remain within touching distance of securing a prestigious top-six finish for a third consecutive year.
