Explained: Why Nottingham Forest will complete transfer despite calls for U-turn

Nottingham Forest winger Josh Bowler is set to join his former club Blackpool on loan after his stint at Olympiacos but some fans are not happy.

Bowler arrived at the City Ground for an undisclosed fee in September after he entered the final months of his contract with Blackpool. The 23-year-old was immediately loaned out to the Greek side owned by Evangelos Marinakis.

But after a disappointing spell at Olympiacos where he made just seven appearances for Michel's side, Bowler is set to return to English football. However, the latest news has left Forest fans questioning the club's decision.

One supporter said on social media: "I can't understand why we chased him so hard to loan him out continuously in the first place. Don’t get me wrong I think he’s a good player so why not give him his chance with us." A second added: "We desperately need a striker."

But fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see Bowler in action for the Reds as he is not allowed to play for Steve Cooper's until next season. According to the FIFA Regulations, a player can only be registered to a maximum of three clubs during one season.

And crucially, the rules state that "during this period, the player is only eligible to play in official matches for two clubs".

Bowler has already played for Blackpool and Olympiacos so far this season, so he would not be able to play for Forest for the remainder of 2022-23 under the rules. As such, a return to the Seasiders would seem to be the most sensible option if he is not staying in Greece.

Should Forest give Bowler an opportunity next season? Let us know in the comments section...
