Explained: African Union, trade corridor, Delhi declaration – key takeaways from G20

The G20 Summit in New Delhi concluded with big promises for global trade and geopolitics as the African Union joined the group, a trade corridor’s plan was tabled, and a consensus was reached for a joint declaration.

The continental body of 55 countries, the African Union became a permanent member of the G20 – marking a pivotal moment in global representation. The India-Saudi Arabia-EU trade corridor, meanwhile, ostensibly brought forth the route to strengthen trade and counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative. But the summit’s breakthrough was the New Delhi leaders’ declaration that the countries adopted despite the divided stands and tension over the Russia-Ukraine war.

What does it mean for global cooperation? Will the dialogue become more inclusive? Will it have an economic impact? Where is the geopolitics headed? How will it influence the war in Ukraine?
