Expert warns against 'car crash' sleeping position that can cause damage

The importance of getting a good night's sleep cannot be overstated, but it turns out there's a right way and a wrong way to drift off when it comes to protecting your health.

Sharing his expertise, a posture expert has revealed why sleeping on your stomach could be doing more harm than good - even dubbing it the 'car crash' sleep position.

To prove his point, James Leinhard demonstrated the problematic pose - claiming it's even worse if you lift one of your legs.

Taking to TikTok, James, one of the pros behind pillow and mattress brand @levitex, explained: "This is the worst ever sleeping position. You're rotating your neck, you're twisting it. You're putting your head up," he claimed.

"You're fighting all the natural curves of your spine. You're compressing your vertebrae. You're getting pins and needles, neck pain, back pain, and you still do it every night."

The expert also positioned a skeleton on the bed to share another visual example. "Does this look comfy to you?" the content creator quizzed.

He added: "It's not comfy. It's just what you're familiar with." However, the news was not welcomed by many viewers, even though the video gained over three million likes.

"That looks freakin' fantastic to me! I mean I would rather sleep like that than not sleep at all, sooooo that's why we sleep like that [sic]," one person replied. "Because I can't sleep otherwise," someone else confirmed.

Meanwhile, a third thought the pose looks 'heavenly'.

Responding to commenters the pro said: "Guys, I'm really not trying to upset you or ruin your sleep. I'm trying to improve the quality of your sleep."

But in good news for those keen to take-up the expert's advice, he's also shared tips for those who find they shift into the position during the night.

In a follow-up video, the TikToker advised side sleeping with a pillow between your knees and ankles to 'support and stabilise' your hip and prevent you swinging one leg over the other.

He added that hugging a pillow helps prevent you from rolling into the 'car crash' position. "Try this for 30 minutes a night," the expert recommended.
