Expert warning over danger of nasal tanning and other alternative methods

A skincare expert has warned against dangerous alternative tanning methods, from nasal sprays to illegal injections. With only 58 days a year of sunshine on average in the UK, Brits often resort to alternative methods to achieve a bronzed complexion.

But Sam Cinkir, CEO of skincare clinic Este Medical Group, has raised concern over some of the techniques people are turning to. He said: “Most people love getting a tan – it gives us a glow that makes us look healthier. But some are putting their health at risk with their endeavors to achieve golden skin.

“It seems young people are specifically at risk of being led down a garden path of alternative tanning methods due to products going viral on social media platforms such as TikTok. And they might not see the damage they are doing until later in life.”

Nasal tanning is not a new phenomenon, and most are aware of the damage it can do, but this hasn’t stopped tanning efficianados from purchasing from unregulated websites. “Inhaling tanning products means you have chemicals entering your bloodstream at rapid speed,” said Mr Cinkir.

“I would always advise extreme caution when it comes to these DIY approaches. It’s much better – and safer – to consult with a qualified medical expert to obtain the correct advice.”

Nasal tanners

Nasal tanners contain a compound called melanotan, which when inhaled increases pigment production in the skin cells, causing skin darkening. Potential side effects include vomiting, dizziness and increased blood pressure.

Tanning shots work in a similar way, and in turn, have the same drastic side effects.

Tanning balms and oils

Exposure to sunlight naturally boosts the production of melanin in the skin, causing it to darken. However, some people are using tan enhancing balms, oils and lotions to speed up this process. There are lots of benefits that come from the sun, including generating vitamin D and lowering blood pressure, but too much can cause havoc on your skin.

The sun’s UV rays can damage your DNA overtime, and when it is damaged this can lead to cells growing out of control, which can lead to cancer.

Using tan enhancing products in the sun attracts more UV rays, and helps the skin absorb these quicker – meaning damage can be caused more rapidly.

Some products being flaunted on social media platforms also contain toxic ingredients which harmful for your skin. It’s always worth checking the ingredients when buying a new product, and always do a patch test.

Sunbeds

Exposing the skin to the artificial UV in sunbeds can damage the skin and lead to more serious issues such as skin cancer. Sunbeds continue to be popular, despite being as dangerous as smoking, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

UV rays from sunbeds and the sun can also weaken the skin, causing fine lines, wrinkles and age spots to appear. By going to these lengths to achieve a tan, many people are hindering the appearance of their skin.

Melanin injections

Despite being illegal in the UK, tanning injections are commonly used. On top of the risks related to anything that stimulates melanin production in the skin, these injections are unregulated.

This means they have not gone through the rigorous testing all skincare products go through before being available to the public. The known short-term side effects include facial swelling, nausea, flushing, vomiting and appetite loss, but with these products being illegal, there is no research into what the long-term effects could be.

How do we safely achieve a bronzed look? According to Sam, balance is key.He said: “There are lots of benefits to sitting out in the sun, including an improved mental health and stronger immune system.

“But it’s best to limit the amount of time your skin is exposed to UV rays, and use at least SPF 30. And remember, even on cloudy days, you are still exposed to UV.”
