Expert shares renter-friendly ways to transform your kitchen

It can sometimes be difficult to put your own stamp on a rented property, leaving your living space feeling lifeless and boring.

According to kitchen retailer Magnet, 4.6m people are renting in the UK, with demand for rental properties soaring by 43% in the last five years.

The company also found Google searches for "renter-friendly kitchen makeovers" increased by 133%, with #rentalfriendlydecor racking up 51.4m views on TikTok.

Jen Nash, design excellence manager at Magnet, said: "Whilst renters may feel limited to how they can refresh their kitchen, there are simple design and layout alternatives that can make your rented kitchen look and feel like your own."

Jen shared her top five tips for refreshing your rental kitchen without breaking landlord agreements.

Prioritise cupboards

Jen said cabinets are the focal point of kitchens and "dominate the visual aspect of the space". She added: "Refreshing the cabinets can make a huge difference. If you're after a complete transformation, invest in sticky vinyl that you can cover your cupboards with, or alternatively fitting LED lighting strips under cabinets can completely transform the appearance of your rented kitchen."

A more drastic option is temporarily removing one of the upper cupboard doors to create an open cabinet, perfect for storing glasses or crockery.

Incorporate natural elements

Jen said: "If your kitchen is feeling dull but your tenancy agreement prohibits you from changing anything, identify an area in your kitchen that has space for natural elements such as plants or flowers. English ivy and cast iron plants are best suited to kitchens, as they are hassle-free and resistant to changing kitchen climates."

Mirrors are also a great addition to rented kitchens and Jen claims they make the space appear larger.

Make appliances a focal point

Storage space in rental properties can sometimes be an issue. Jen added: "Whilst some people may be overwhelmed by this prospect, you can use this to your advantage with rented spaces.

"Try a wall-friendly pot rack or install a pegboard on an empty wall. This will not only save space in your cupboards but can also create a beautiful statement piece in your kitchen."

Create a backsplash

Adding a backsplash not only protects surfaces but can also breathe new life into a kitchen. Jen added: "Invest in sticky tiles or vinyl for your backsplash. This option also gives you the flexibility to experiment with different colours, patterns and textures."

Coordinate your colours

Rental properties are often neutral and it can be hard for your living space to reflect your personality. Jen said one way of refreshing a kitchen is to co-ordinate colours. She added: "Adding coloured bar stools that match artwork or your smaller kitchen appliances is a simple way to create a coordinated and visually pleasing space that doesn't require any labouring."
