Expert explains 40p hack to rid pillows of bacteria 'without washing'

Keeping our beds clean is hugely important especially as we spend almost a third of our lives tucked up asleep.

During the night we can sweat a lot and spread bacteria onto our mattresses and pillows. The nasty bacteria can easily build up if bed cleanliness is not kept on top of, causing an array of problems from stains on sheets to skin acne.

However, there are some simple things you can to keep hygiene levels high, with MattressNexDay sharing an easy hack to keep on top of things. Martin Seeley, CEO and sleep expert at the company told Express.co.uk: "You should wash your pillows every three months in the washing machine, however, make sure to check their wash label to see what wash suits them best.

"When washing them, make sure to use a mild washing powder and include an extra spin cycle at the end to get rid of as much moisture to prevent the build-up of mould."

The expert added that the nifty hack can be used in between washes to make sure your bed stays clean and fresh, suggesting that distilled white vinegar is the best solution to spray on your pillow to keep it as fresh as possible. However, he explains that the solution should not simply be poured on pillows.

White vinegar is something lots of us will have in our cupboards already but if not, the staple won't cost much at all to purchase - as little as 40p in fact.

Baking soda is another option as it can soak up any sweat and oils that may have seeped into your pillow overnight.

Mark added: "The trick is to sprinkle yours with bicarbonate of soda and leave it for a few hours"
