Oregon and Ohio State are set to face off in the Rose Bowl in a highly anticipated College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Both teams boast experienced starting quarterbacks who have excelled in their collegiate careers.

Dillon Gabriel, the quarterback for the Ducks, is in his sixth season and has started a record 62 games across three top programs. On the other side, Will Howard leads the Buckeyes in his fifth year at his second school. Together, they have thrown over 3,000 passes and scored 230 touchdowns before their upcoming matchup.

Despite their extensive experience, Gabriel at 24 and Howard at 23 are not among the oldest starting quarterbacks in the FBS this season. Both players have embraced the trend of athletes capitalizing on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities while pursuing their college football careers to the fullest.

Gabriel, a former UCF and Oklahoma starter, believes in the value of gaining experience and knowledge by staying in college longer rather than rushing into professional football. He sees the benefits of players having more time to develop their skills and character through extended college eligibility.

While some traditionalists may criticize the trend of players staying in college longer, Gabriel argues that it ultimately benefits the sport by producing better individuals who are coached and mentored effectively.

Howard's journey to Ohio State as a transfer quarterback mirrors that of Justin Fields, who found success after moving from Georgia. Despite facing challenges in his transition to the Buckeyes, Howard has proven himself as a leader and winner for the team.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day acknowledges the unique situation of bringing in an experienced transfer quarterback like Howard. He highlights Howard's qualities as a player and leader that have contributed to the team's success.

While experience has its advantages, Howard acknowledges the need for time and effort to build chemistry with his new teammates and coaching staff. Despite initial struggles, Howard and the Buckeyes have persevered and secured a spot in the College Football Playoff.

As the Rose Bowl matchup approaches, both teams are poised to showcase the talents of their seasoned quarterbacks in what promises to be a thrilling quarterfinal showdown.
