An experienced hiker, identified as 30-year-old Caroline Meister, was discovered deceased at the base of a waterfall in the Ventana Wilderness of Northern California. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office confirmed the finding after a search and rescue operation.
Caroline Meister had gone missing during a hike that she started from the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She was reported missing on Monday, March 18, and her body was found a few days later near a trail close to the Zen Mountain Center.
Authorities stated that foul play is not suspected in Meister's death. The cause of death is pending confirmation by the coroner, but the injuries observed on her body are consistent with a fall from a height.
Meister, described as an experienced hiker, was only carrying snacks for the day and was not equipped for an overnight stay when she disappeared. Search and rescue teams, including the Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, Drone Team, and a California Highway Patrol Helicopter, conducted extensive searches to locate her.
Residents at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center informed authorities that Meister had mentioned hiking a loop trail that would lead back to the center and also referenced the 'Windcave Trail' before her disappearance.
Caroline Meister was described as a white adult female, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with long brown hair that was likely tied back. She was last seen wearing teal boots and carrying a blue bag.
