'Exhilarating and exasperating' -National media react as Tottenham beat Leeds in 7-goal thriller

If two things were to be absolute guarantees for Spurs' Premier League meeting with Leeds on Saturday, it was that both teams will attack with vigour when they want to, but likely struggle defensively, so it wasn't a great surprise to see this game finish with seven goals.

Jesse Marsch's side led three times in the fixture courtesy of goals from Crysencio Summerville and a double in either half from Rodrigo, but Harry Kane, Ben Davies and a late brace from Rodrigo Bentancur saw Spurs come out on the right side of a thrilling game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The win places Antonio Conte's side exactly where they finished last season, fourth, and while the reaction to many results this season for Spurs has been negative, they are in a good place to maintain another top four pursuit.

With that said, here is how the national media reacted to another game where Spurs had to come from behind to take all three points:

The Guardian

"Six weeks’ pause for breath never looked so tempting. This match had a seesaw feel about it at the outset and went on to surpass itself; Tottenham and Leeds were exhilarating and exasperating in turn, often during the same sequence of play, but when the music stopped it was Antonio Conte who could savour the moment with his inimitable brand of arm-whirling euphoria. He had enjoyed watching Harry Kane and Ben Davies adorn their World Cup preparations with goals but nobody in the ground could have predicted the identity of the player who turned things on their head.

"Rodrigo Bentancur had been helpless to prevent his opponent and namesake, the forward Rodrigo, from scoring his second outstanding goal of the game but need not have been concerned. Spurs were losing again with 14 minutes left but, by the time seven more had passed, the Uruguayan had converted two chances of his own.

"The first was a 15-yard drive deflected in via Luke Ayling, Leeds’s unfortunate substitute; next up was a close-range finish after stellar work from Dejan Kulusevski, whose return to the starting lineup after injury made all the difference for Tottenham. Now Conte can avoid too many awkward questions given Spurs will spend Christmas in the top four."

Daily Mail

"Rodrigo Bentancur has become an unlikely late rescue artist and his two goals in as many minutes towards the end of a breathless contest with Leeds secured Tottenham a place in the top four as the Premier League breaks for the World Cup.

"The elegant Uruguayan midfielder kept their Champions League hopes alive with a late equaliser against Sporting Lisbon, last month, and snatched a late winner at Bournemouth in another epic comeback.

"Here, he took his tally to four in six games, transforming defeat into a much-needed victory for Spurs boss Antonio Conte, whose team have been misfiring in recent weeks, and torture for Jesse Marsch."

Evening Standard

"A dramatic late double from Rodrigo Bentancur fired Tottenham to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leeds to help them finish the first half of the Premier League season with a much-needed win. The visitors had gone ahead three times in London, but tasted defeat after Uruguayan midfielder Bentancur firstly levelled in the 81st minute before he grabbed what proved to be the winner two minutes later.

"It meant Rodrigo's impressive double and Crysencio Summerville's opener for Leeds counted for little after Spurs mounted several fightbacks to end a tough period with a crucial three points. Recent home league defeats to Newcastle and Liverpool, in addition to their Carabao Cup exit at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, had contributed towards boss Antonio Conte reiterating the need for patience and time."
