Exhibition marks 60 years since Stirling concert of iconic rockers The Beatles

A piece of Stirling music history will be celebrated this summer with a new exhibition about the Fab Four.

The Beatles gig at Bridge of Allan’s Museum Hall, which took place almost 60 years ago, forms a basis of ‘Superfan – Stirling’s Story of The Beatles - Music, People and Place’ which runs at Creative Stirling’s Made in Stirling premises in King Street from Monday, June 27 to Sunday, August 14.

It features a collection of Beatles, and other 60s music print ephemera, collected and archived over the years by late fan Douglas Montgomery of Falkirk who had been at the Museum Hall gig on January 5, 1963.

Made in Stirling director Paul Jenkins said this week: “We have spent hours, and I mean hours, with Ewen Duncan from the city’s Europa Records going through Douglas’s collection of Beatles and other Sixties items.

“Some gorgeous small objects have been picked out such as cardboard Beatles cut-outs which in reality are only a few inches tall. There’s pin badges, then the rarer official fan club letters and collectables sent out by the fan club.

“On a larger scale, there are posters and rare vinyls with their inserts.

“There was also a huge collection of magazines and newspapers from those early years which will be on view.”

There is also a collage by Falkirk artist Frances Ryan which incorporates a representation of the Museum Hall.

The exhibition will be launched at a special gig at the King Street premises on Sunday, June 26, between 2pm and 5pm, featuring Stirling Beatles tribute act Revolver.

They are James Battison (guitar and vocals); George Battison (bass and vocals); Alan Brown (drums); John Carefull (guitar and vocals).

Guitarist James from Cornton who now lives in the Borders, said: “I was born in the late 60s. I really didn’t become aware of The Beatles until my teens. But once I heard them I was hooked. Their music took over my life.

“The music is still relevant today - and it’s great that this exhibition arrives as Paul McCartney reaches his 80th birthday.”

The exhibition – supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund - is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

The June 26 preview/gig day lasts from 2pm to 7pm and also features Ewen Duncan from Europa Records playing some rare Beatles vinyl. Tickets for this gig/preview, priced £7.50, at madeinstirlingstore.com
