Exhibition aims to protect rivers

The US embassy and the Chiang Khong community in Chiang Rai present "Rivers Of Life" at Iconlux pop-up space on the 1st floor of Iconsiam, Charoen Nakhon Road, until March 26.

Held to mark the 190th anniversary of US-Thai diplomatic ties and partnership in protecting our rivers, the exhibition is an art experience about the US and Thailand's shared culture of rivers, the Mekong and the Mississippi.

It is the final episode of "A Tale Of Two Rivers", the US mission's largest cultural exchange in more than three years. In January, the US embassy brought nine American artists, joined by Thai artists to Chiang Khong, where they learned from the community and co-created dance, film and art with youth to tell the stories of the rivers.

Last month, they held four performances in the Chiang Khong market and at Iconsiam. Part of the experience is a collaboration between Montika "Earn" Kam-On, a young Thai moving image artist, and Alexis Karl, a US filmmaker and perfume artist.

Montika presents a video titled Perception Disparity which recounts the stories behind the two rivers and exposes the dark side of unchecked development projects, including dam constructions that destroyed the once clean and abundant rivers.

Karl, meanwhile, portrays the link between people and the rivers through a boat which is covered with large fabrics of different colours to represent different cultures found along the banks of both the Mekong and the Mississippi. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the link between humans and the fate of our rivers. Visitors are encouraged to see the urgency of our responsibility to restore the natural balance and build a sustainable future.
