Exciting Newcastle talent and Eddie Howe favourite will need to learn from derby 'mistake'

Newcastle United rising star Jay Turner-Cooke will need to learn from the 'mistake' of being sent off in the Tyne-Wear derby clash with Sunderland. The young Magpies were denied victory at St James' Park on Monday night after goalkeeper Alex Bass netted an injury-time equaliser.

Turner-Cooke has impressed Eddie Howe in recent months, with the United boss describing the 18-year-old as a 'real talent'. The creative midfielder joined the first team in their pre-season preparations in Austria and Portugal, and has made a strong start to the season with the U21s.

However, the ex-Black Cats prospect endured a nightmare reunion with his former side on Halloween. Turner-Cooke received two yellow cards in quick succession, the second of which was for a clash with Bass in the 78th minute which sparked an ugly confrontation between the teams.

Joe White had given the hosts the lead, but the hosts were unable to hang on for the win with Bass levelling the contest in the 95th. The goalkeeper would later admit he scored with a handball, but the goal was allowed to stand despite the protests of the young Magpies.

Newcastle U21s boss Elliott Dickman questioned the referee's decisions for the equaliser and Turner-Cooke's second booking, insisting White had been fouled in the build-up to the clash. However, Dickman also admitted the club's coaching staff would be speaking with Turner-Cooke to avoid similar scenarios in the future.

The U21s boss told ChronicleLive: "The big thing for all of our players is they've got to understand to try and control their emotions. They've got to be disciplined in the heat of the battle, in that moment especially when you've been booked.

"If you do something silly or been seen something to have done something silly, you put yourself at risk of staying on the pitch. I think that's the mistake Jay has made tonight."

When asked if he would be speaking with Turner-Cooke about his dismissal, Dickman added: "It will definitely be reviewed. It's more maybe what the first foul was for and the first yellow card, and from there helping him understand that you can't do what he's done.

"Even the first bit, maybe if his positional play was a bit better then he doesn't get the first yellow. It comes down to emotions and discipline, and I just think tonight [Monday night] it has got the better of him."
