Excel conference centre in east London to host 200mph Formula E 'eco Grand Prix' race for another year

Batteries are included: A Formula E race at Excel - (Excel London)

The Excel conference centre in east London will continue to host the Formula E world racing car championships for at least another year, it has been confirmed.

The vast arena, in the Royal Docks, has been used for the race since 2021, with drivers racing on a specially created track – that takes them inside and outside of the building - at speeds up to 200mph.

About 50,000 racing fans are drawn to the two days of racing using battery-powered cars that showcase how manufacturers use latest technology to achieve speeds close to Formula 1 cars, which have a top speed of 230mph.

Excel is due to host the finale of the current Formula E 2024/25 season on July 26-27. It has also secured a 2025/26 race - when it is also expected to host the finale of the Season 12 calendar.

Alberto Longo, chief championship officer, Formula E, said: “We’re pleased to extend our relationship with Excel London, which has been a perfect home for Formula E over the last few years.

“Its unique track conditions and event space offers fans and drivers the very best of our sport, bringing the best racing and entertainment together in a truly unique venue at the heart of the capital, while all delivered sustainably.”

Damian Norman, director of immersive entertainment & events at Excel London, said: “Since our inaugural race in 2021, it’s been incredible for Excel to host such a sporting spectacle and to work with Formula E in creating the only indoor/outdoor circuit.

“It’s also been an honour for Excel and London to stage the championship’s season finale and for British fans to witness a world champion of motorsport crowned on UK soil.

“We’ve also developed a great collaboration with Formula E too, from setting the Guinness World Indoor Land Speed Record to ensuring the event is powered using 100 per cent renewable energy, so we’re delighted to be continuing this into 2026.”

During the Season 10 finale last July, nearly 50,000 fans were drawn to Excel to see Pascal Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team claim his first World Championship victory.

Formula E races are shorter than Formula 1 races but have a similar potential for drama, with 22 drivers racing at high speed through street circuits deliberately located in urban areas.

Formula E, officially known as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, had reportedly been considering Silverstone and Brands Hatch as alternative venues.

The current season, which began last December in Sao Paolo in Brazil, involves 10 world cities, including Miami, Tokyo and Shanghai.

Formula E currently uses GEN3 Evo cars, which can accelerate from 0-60mph in 1.82 seconds, with initial acceleration 30 per cent quicker than a Formula 1 car.

The cars are expected to be upgraded to GEN4 after the 2025/6 season. This could see a switch to traditional racing circuits.
