‘Exceeded expectations’: Schmeichel blown away by Celtic support during home debut

Kasper Schmeichel admitted his first home match as a Celtic player "exceeded expectations".

The one-time English Premier League winner signed a one-year deal with the Hoops this summer and made his competitive debut during a 4-0 rout of Kilmarnock at Parkhead on Sunday afternoon.

Celtic were welcomed onto the pitch by a guard of honour from their opponents as well as an impressive fan display covering all four stands around the iconic stadium.

"Yeah it exceeded expectation," the experienced goalkeeper told Celtic TV.

"It's been an incredible welcome. I must say it's been overwhelming and something that makes me very proud. But also it makes me very, very motivated to keep winning for this team."

Schmeichel didn't have a lot to do on his competitive debut and was purely an observer for large parts.

That meant he could stand and watch the quality display on show in front of him, with goals from Reo Hatate, Liam Scales, Nicolas Kuhn and Anthony Ralston showing why Celtic are favourites to retain the Scottish Premiership title yet again.

"They were incredible," he beamed when asked about Celtic's overall performance.

"If I could have a full season of them, I'd be buzzing. But the lads were brilliant.

"We had a really good pre-season, played some incredible stuff; today was a different kind of game but I thought we did really well. We moved the ball fast, we had good combinations, good goals, everything was good.

"They didn't really create any chances and that's because the boys, not just at the back but from the front, defended, counter pressed good, so it was a very good afternoon."
