Exact time you could see partial solar eclipse in skies over Merseyside

A partial solar eclipse will take place across the UK later today.

The United Kingdom is set for yet another astronomical event as the country will shortly fall into shadow. A solar eclipse occurs with the moon positions itself between the sun and the earth, causing it to be obscured.

The further north you are in the UK, the better chance you'll have of seeing the partial solar eclipse today, according to experts.

The event is a rarity with the next not expected to take place until April 2023. A total eclipse is scheduled for 2024 but will only be visible from North and Central America.

Later this evening the eclipse will be visible over areas of Europe, Western Siberia, Central Asia, Western Asia, South Asia, and from the northeast of Africa. The UK will experience an eclipse of around 15% due to its position.

In the UK, the eclipse will begin at 10:08am today, with the maximum eclipse occurring in the capital at 10.59am. Those watching across the country can expect the event to end just under an hour later at 11.51am.

Despite the sun being partially blocked, it can still be harmful to look directly at it. It is suggested to wear glasses specifically created for eclipse viewing.

You can also make a pinhole projector and to do this, you simply poke a small hole into a piece of card and hold it up to the sun. Those making their own projectors should position the hole so the light from the sun shines through the card onto a piece of paper you place behind it.

You can then watch the shadow of the eclipse on the piece of paper.
