Exact day Met Office forecasts snow in the North East this week after glorious sunshine

Temperatures are set to drop this week and some parts of the North East could even see snow, forecasters say.

The North East has enjoyed a recent string of warm and sunny days, giving us false hope that summer weather was here. In our region, temperatures reached highs of around 17-18C with blue skies and endless sunshine.

But meteorologists say there is a change on the way. People will get a "taste of most of the seasons within the space of a few days", a Met Office forecaster has said, as above-average temperatures makes way for more wintry conditions.

Hill snow is likely to affect some parts of Scotland on Tuesday night, with higher areas of the UK to follow on Wednesday said forecaster Marco Petagna. He said: "We'll get a taste of most of the seasons within the space of a few days."

The forecast for the North East says showers on Wednesday and Thursday could turn to snow on high ground.

Greater cloud cover across central and eastern England will mean temperatures are down a few degrees, Mr Petagna said. He added: "But it's still pretty good for the time of year. The average at the end of March would usually only be 9C or 10C in the north and 10-12C in the south.

"So it's still pretty good at the start of the week."

He said there will be a "more notable change" from midweek, with Thursday looking likely to be "a cold day for most" with highs of between 6C and 11C.

On Wednesday and Thursday, wet weather is expected according to the Met Office with snow also a possibility on higher ground in the North East. They are expecting the following conditions: "Some sunny spells Tuesday, before turning colder and cloudier as a band of rain sinks south overnight. Showers likely on Wednesday and Thursday, perhaps turning to snow over high ground."

In the Met Office's long-range forecast for the North East which spans from March 30 to April 8, it expects showers to become more prominent, and even says some snow showers may hit northern areas.

They are forecasting the following: "Rather low confidence heading into this period, with the likelihood of it remaining unsettled. Possible frequent wintry showers across the north, particularly northern and eastern coastal areas. Further south, largely cloudy with some showers and perhaps some hill snow with a small chance of this reaching low levels.

"Windier than previous days for most and feeling widely cold. Thereafter becoming increasingly unsettled, with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow towards the southwest and periods of snow at lower levels possible.

"Brighter conditions further northwest alongside showers and snow over hills. Conditions improving from the northwest for a time with showers easing here, but then becoming increasingly unsettled once again later in this period. Temperatures expected to gradually recover to average, though overnight frost remains possible during clearer spells."
