Driving examiners will strike during December 2022 and January 2023.
Some members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) are planning strikes as part of national industrial action over pay, pensions, jobs and redundancy terms. These strikes will impact people trying to take their car and motorbike driving test, as well other driving tests.
The strike action will not affect anyone who plans to take their driving theory test in these months. The strikes will impact different areas of Britain at different times.

For North West England and Yorkshire and the Humber, strikes will happen from Monday, December 19 to Saturday, December 24. Test centres in Merseyside and its surrounding areas will be impacted, these include: Norris Green , Southport , Speke , St Helens , and Widnes .
The strike action might affect:
- car driving tests
- motorcycle tests
- lorry, bus, coach and minibus driving tests (these are known as vocational tests)
- tractor or specialist vehicle driving tests
- approved driving instructor (ADI) part 2 (driving ability) or part 3 (instructional ability) tests
- ADI standards checks
- moped and motorcycle compulsory basic training (CBT) checks - but not the training courses themselves

If you have a driving test booked for those dates, you might not need to change the date. Not all examiners are members of the union, and ones that are may choose not to strike. If you do change the date of your test you'll need to give at least three days notice, or you'll have to pay again.
DVSA will automatically rebook your driving test for you if it cannot go ahead because of the strike action. You’ll be sent the new details within five to 10 working days. You do not need to contact DVSA.
In a statement the PCS said: "We are now in a position to call significant industrial action in support of our claim for a 10% pay rise, pensions justice, job security and and no cuts to redundancy terms. Action involving all members in the areas which meet the legal requirements would be called to have the maximum effect, including coordinated action with other unions.
"Members taking sustained action in targeted areas to put major pressure on the Government will receive significant financial support from the union. PCS will continue the campaign to win what you deserve at work. "
